Correction: The sefer “Maaneh L'Igeres was not written by “Satmar”. Rather, a private individual by the name of Rabbi Schwartz, who was a Lubliner talmid, and disagreed with the style of psak of R' Moshe, authored this work.

Excellent interview and a must read for anyone who is involved in kiruv.

  3. A. Billet says:

As a talmid of Rabbi Tendler, many of these anecdotes and observations were familiar. I commend Shaul Seidler-Feller for asking great questions, and for bringing Rabbi Tendler's keen insights to the public in this fitting and respectful manner.

Rabbi Tendler's unique perspective on the history of Judaism in America in the last century, from the Lower East Side to where we are headed is so important when we consider how much God needs to be brought back into the equation, and how much we need to reach those who still say, “Religious observance is nice… for you. But I could never do that.”

Good interview, I enjoyed it. Gut yor to all.

For historical accuracy, I'd like the vignette about Rav Moshe expelling the Rav clarified, corrected, or corroborated.
    1. How come Rabbi Moshe Tendler attended the Synagogue Council dinner that was in honor of Dr. Belkin and the leaders of JTS and HUC even though his “shverer” Rav Moshe was one of the signatories prohibiting that dinner?

2.Isn't it true that Rav Moshe zatzal conveyed apologies to Dr. Belkin regarding his public stance regarding that dinner.

    3. Is there any official record to corroborate the story that Rav Moshe expelled the Rav zatzal – its amazing that nobody else seems to remember such a situation.

    4. The only one that Rav Moshe may have been instrumental in expelling from the Agudas HaRabannim for participation in these organizations was his nephew who was a Rabbi of a synagogue in New Jersey and was president of the RCA at that time and played a role in the interdenominational organizations and activities.

    5. Its possible that Rabbi Tendler, in his elderly years, has the relatives confused.

Zocher HaNishkachos – but not those things that never happened.

  6. BROWSER250 says:

it is well known, and i myself heard it from someone who attended rav. Tendlers wedding, that r' Moshe z'l wanted very much that the seating arrangements should be separate, but his mechatunim the Tendlers insisted that it be mixed, and being that reb. Moshe was the ultimate OHEV SHALOM VRODEF SHALOM,he backed down and agreed it to be mixed.

  7. Leiby Geffen says:

“The truth, of course, is that our talmidim are better than theirs, our rashei yeshivah are more learned than theirs, our success in communities is greater than theirs”

Unfortunately, Rabbi Tendler did not learn humility from his shver

    • hamevaser says:

Note how humility (and its opposite) usually refers to oneself, while R.

Tendler is here talking about an institution that is much larger than he.

  8. DF says:

It seems like R. Tendler underplayed R. Soloveitchik's influence on YU. Thousands of rabbis who were appointed to US congregations, yeshivos, youth groups, and other institutions got s'micha from him (and some from his father). It seems like the biggest mention of R. Yosef Soloveitchik was about his supposedly having been expelled from this rabbinical council that's not the RCA. Lovely.

  9. Michael11694 says:

This interview, which I assume was edited for publication, is beautifully done. I well remember Dr. Tendler's father from RJJ as a charismatic rebbe, with a great sense of humor and a generous spirit, beloved by both talmidei chachomim and the hamon am. What has happened to us? The yeshiva world looked upon the practice of Yiddishkeit as a competition between the newly arrived immigrants and the already-present orthodox jews. Certain outward signs and customs brought here by immigrant jews were looked on as being innately “frummer” than non-hassidic customs: Cholov Yisroel, Glatt Kosher, separate seating, shtiblech, avoidance of higher secular education, very high mechitzos, etc., and were ultimately adopted by many jews as the de-facto minimum standards for Orthodoxy. We still suffer from this phenomenon because it was never effectively addressed by the Orthodox Jewish leadership in the US. As Rabbi Rakkefet says, the competition has already been lost.
